Loud fan, thermal warnings, or random shutdowns mid-game? We diagnose what's actually causing the heat and fix it, from a full deep clean to liquid metal reapplication.
A PS5 that's running hot will tell you in a few different ways. You might see a "PS5 is too hot" warning on screen and get dropped back to the dashboard. The fan might suddenly ramp up to jet-engine volumes during gameplay that used to run quietly. Or the console might just shut itself off mid-game without any warning at all. Sometimes you'll get a combination of these.
None of this is normal wear behaviour. A PS5 in good shape should sound roughly the same after three years as it did out of the box. When it doesn't, there's a specific cause worth identifying.
When a PS5 comes in for overheating, we check three things in order:
The PS5's liquid metal thermal interface is unique among consoles and one of the most-asked-about parts of the repair. It's safe and it works well, but it has to be applied correctly. Done carelessly, it can migrate onto adjacent components on the motherboard, which causes a different and worse set of problems. We prep the foam gasket properly to prevent migration and we dose the application by weight, not by eye.
Sometimes a console comes in for overheating and the symptom turns out to be something else, the Blue Light of Death starting up as a thermal shutdown, or a power supply fault mimicking a heat issue. We diagnose first so you're not paying for the wrong repair. If you have the same symptom on an Xbox instead, see our Xbox Series X overheating repair page.
Removal and clean reapplication of the liquid metal thermal interface between the APU and the heatsink, with proper foam-gasket prep to prevent migration.
Replacement of the VRAM and VRM thermal pads on the PS5 motherboard, using correct-thickness pads for the area.
Complete teardown, fan removal and clean, dust extraction from the heatsink fins, and intake-vent clear-out.
Bench testing of the PS5's main cooling fan for bearing wear or controller fault, with replacement when the fan is the actual root cause.
