The five symptom buckets

PS5 disc drive faults almost always fall into one of these:

1. Disc inserts but isn't recognized. The drive pulls the disc in, you hear the spin-up, but the game never appears on the dashboard. Often the laser, sometimes the drive board.
2. Disc gets ejected immediately. The drive pulls the disc in and pushes it back out within a second or two. Usually a sensor fault on the drive mechanism.
3. Disc is stuck inside. The eject button does nothing. The manual eject screw underneath the console doesn't help, or only ejects partially. Eject motor, gear, or mechanism fault.
4. Grinding, clicking, or scraping noises. Something mechanical is wrong. Usually a worn gear, broken sled, or misaligned mechanism.
5. Used to work, now skips or freezes. Progressive laser degradation, or accumulated dust in the optical path. Sometimes the drive board.

If a disc is stuck inside

Bring the console with the disc inside. We extract it cleanly as the first step of the diagnosis, with the drive opened on the bench so the disc can be lifted free without scratching. Forcing a stuck disc with the manual eject screw can damage both the disc and the drive sled, so it's worth bringing the console in before trying anything aggressive.

What we typically replace

Depending on what the diagnosis turns up, the actual repair work might involve any of:

• Eject motor or eject gear replacement
• Drive sled or drive mechanism replacement
• Laser assembly replacement
• Component-level repair on the drive control board, which is where micro-soldering comes in
• Belt and gear cleaning where the fault is mechanical wear rather than a broken part
