Match the symptom to the repair

• Character walks on its own, camera pans, cursor wanders. Stick drift. See Joy-Con drift repair.

Quick checks before you bring it in

1. Recalibrate a drifting stick. It takes a couple of minutes in System Settings. It rarely fixes wear, but it costs nothing to rule out.
2. Try a known-good cable and charger. Ideally Nintendo's own. If the Switch still won't charge, the fault is in the console.
3. Do the handheld test. A Switch that charges and plays normally in handheld mode has a dock-side problem, not a console problem.

The third-party dock problem

It comes up often enough to mention here. Some third-party Switch docks have fed incorrect voltage or signalling through the USB-C connector and damaged the M92T36 power-management chip on the console. Once it fails, the Switch can lose its TV output and sometimes its ability to charge. If the trouble started after you used a non-Nintendo dock, tell us, because it changes where we look and what the repair involves.

Switch, OLED and Lite

Each model has its own screen and its own board layout. The original Switch uses a 6.2 inch LCD, the OLED a 7 inch OLED panel, and the Lite a 5.5 inch LCD built into the body. The Lite also has its sticks built in rather than on removable Joy-Cons, and it doesn't dock. Lite repairs take a little longer because the disassembly is more involved, but they're work we do regularly.
