Match the symptom to the repair
- Powers on, fan spins, no picture on the TV. Almost always the HDMI port. See Xbox HDMI port repair.
- Loud fan, hot top vent, shutdowns in demanding games. Heat. See Xbox overheating repair.
- Won't turn on, or turns off before the dashboard. Often a power supply fault rather than heat.
- Discs won't read or eject. The disc drive: mechanism, laser assembly or drive motor.
- Character or camera moves on its own. Controller stick drift, fixed by replacing the stick module.
Quick checks before you bring it in
- No picture: try a known-good HDMI cable and a different TV input. If nothing works on any cable or TV, the fault is in the console.
- Overheating: give the console open space around its vents. If it still gets scorching hot and shuts down, the inside needs attention.
- Won't power on: try another outlet and another power cable. If it's still dead, it's internal.
Series X, Series S and Xbox One
The Series X and Series S share the same HDMI connector, but their motherboards and cooling are different. The Series X has a larger board and a heatsink that has to come off for access; the Series S is more compact, with a different access path. The repair is the same kind of work on both, and the price usually isn't different. We also repair the Xbox One, One S and One X, including HDMI port replacement.
What we look at beyond the fault you brought in
A damaged HDMI port can take nearby filtering components or the HDMI driver chip with it, so we check that whole section of the board. A console in for overheating gets its fan bench-tested and its airflow path cleaned, and if the symptoms point to cracked joints under the APU, we tell you before moving to a reflow. HDMI repairs finish with a signal test on a TV before the console is closed up.
