Quick check: is it the screen?
A few things tell you a lot before you bring the laptop in:
- Connect an external monitor or TV. If the picture looks right there, the laptop's graphics are working and the fault is in the screen or its cable. If the external display shows the same problem, the fault is deeper, on the graphics side or the board.
- Move the lid slowly. Flicker or lines that change as you open and close the lid usually point to the display cable or its connection rather than the panel itself.
- Shine a flashlight on a dark screen. If you can faintly see the desktop, the panel is working and the backlight has failed. That's a different repair from a cracked panel.
Cracks, spreading dark blots, and dead pixels are the panel itself. Those need a new screen.
What the repair involves
- We confirm the exact panel from your model number: size, resolution, connector, and whether it's LCD, OLED or touch.
- The bezel or display assembly comes apart, and the old panel is disconnected and removed. On some models the panel is bonded into the lid and the whole display assembly is replaced; your quote tells you which applies.
- The new panel goes in and is connected to the display cable.
- We test it before reassembly: dead pixels, even backlight, colour, and touch on touchscreen models.
- Final check with the lid opened and closed through its full range, so a pinched cable doesn't show up a week later.
What we look at on the rest of the laptop
A drop hard enough to crack a screen can do other damage. We check the hinges and the lid, the display cable where it runs through the hinge, and that the laptop starts and runs normally. If a spill caused the damage, we look at the board as well, because liquid rarely stops at the screen.
When the fault turns out to be the backlight circuit or the display connector on the board rather than the panel, that's board-level work we do in-house with micro-soldering under microscope.
