Quick check before you bring it in

1. Try a different charger. Use one you know works, with the right wattage for your laptop. Worn charger cables, especially near the plug, cause a lot of "broken port" symptoms.
2. Look into the port with a flashlight. A bent or broken centre pin on a barrel jack, bent contacts in a USB-C port, or a port pushed sideways in the case is mechanical damage, and the port needs replacing.
3. Feel the fit. A plug that wobbles or falls out on its own usually means the port has worn or its solder joints have cracked.

If a known-good charger still won't charge the laptop and the port looks fine, the fault could be the port, the battery, or the charging circuit on the board. That's what the diagnosis sorts out.

What the repair involves

Laptops use two kinds of charging port. Older and larger laptops often use a barrel-style DC jack, and newer ones usually charge over USB-C. Either one can be mounted on a short cable inside the laptop or soldered straight to the motherboard. When the port is on a cable, the fix is replacing that part. When it's soldered to the board, the repair goes like this:

1. Teardown to reach the motherboard.
2. Inspection of the port and the surrounding board under microscope.
3. Removal of the damaged port with a hot-air rework station, temperature controlled to protect nearby components.
4. Pad cleaning, and trace repair if the old port came off with damage to the board.
5. Installation of the new port, soldered with fine-tip work under microscope.
6. Charge test before the laptop goes back together.

What we look at on the rest of the board

A port that was forced or shorted can take components near it along with it. We check the charging circuit around the port and the battery's ability to take a charge, so a new port isn't installed on a board that still won't charge. When the fault is in the charging circuit, that's component-level micro-soldering we do in-house, the same bench work we do on Switch charging ports and console HDMI ports.
