Right after the spill

1. Turn it off and unplug it. Hold the power button if you have to. Power running through a wet board is what causes the worst damage.
2. Don't turn it back on to test it. Even if it seems fine, every power-up with liquid inside risks a short.
3. Tip out what you can and bring it in. Skip the rice and the hair dryer. The sooner the board is cleaned, the better the chances of a full recovery.

Why liquid damage gets worse with time

The liquid itself dries. What it leaves behind doesn't. Sugar, minerals and other residue stay on the logic board and keep reacting with the metal in the circuitry, especially where power is present. Corrosion eats at tiny components and the traces that connect them, which is why a MacBook can work for a few days after a spill and then stop charging, stop booting, or start acting strangely.

What the repair involves

1. Teardown and inspection under microscope to see where the liquid went and what it touched.
2. Logic board removal and ultrasonic cleaning to lift residue from the whole board, including under chips.
3. Corrosion removal, and trace repair with micro-wire jumpers where corrosion has broken a circuit path.
4. Replacement of damaged components, found by checking the board's circuits one by one.
5. Reassembly and testing: power, charging, keyboard, trackpad, display and ports.
