Quick check: battery, charger or port?

"My laptop won't charge" can be three different problems. Two minutes of checking helps narrow it down:

1. Try another charger if you can. Chargers and their cables fail more often than people expect. If a known-good charger works, the laptop is fine.
2. Watch the charging light. If charging only works with the plug held at an angle, or cuts in and out when the cable moves, the problem is the charging port, not the battery. That's a charging port repair.
3. Check what Windows says. If the laptop shows it's plugged in and charging but the battery drains fast or the laptop shuts off at 20 or 30 percent, the battery itself has worn out.

If the battery is swelling

A swollen battery pushes up from inside: the trackpad gets hard to click, the keyboard bulges, the bottom case rocks on a flat table, or the case starts to separate at the seams. Stop using and charging the laptop, keep it away from heat, and don't press on it or try to pry the battery out yourself. Bring it in and we'll remove it safely.

What the replacement involves

1. We match the battery to your exact model, since batteries differ even between models in the same line.
2. The laptop is opened and the old battery is disconnected before anything else is touched.
3. The old battery comes out. On many modern laptops it is screwed or glued into the chassis, and a swollen one is removed with extra care.
4. The new battery goes in, and we check that it charges and that the laptop reads it correctly before it goes back together.

What we look at on the rest of the laptop

With the laptop open, we check the parts a battery problem can affect or hide: the charging port, the trackpad and keyboard if the old battery was swelling, and the fan and vents, since heat wears batteries out faster. If the laptop still won't charge with a new battery, the fault is in the charging circuit on the board, which we repair in-house with micro-soldering.
