Signs your MacBook needs a new battery

• The battery drains far faster than it used to
• The MacBook shuts down while the battery still shows charge
• It only runs when the charger is plugged in
• macOS shows Service Recommended for the battery
• The MacBook feels slower than it used to, a common side effect of a worn battery
• The trackpad is hard to click, the case bulges, or the MacBook rocks on a flat table, all signs of swelling

What the replacement involves

1. We confirm your exact model, since MacBook Air and MacBook Pro batteries differ from one generation to the next.
2. The bottom case comes off and the battery is disconnected before anything else is touched.
3. The old battery is removed. On most recent MacBooks it's glued into the case, so it comes out slowly and with care, especially when it's swollen.
4. The new battery goes in, and we confirm the MacBook charges and reads the new battery correctly before closing it up.

What we look at on the rest of the MacBook

A swollen battery presses on everything around it, so we check the trackpad, keyboard and case for damage. If the MacBook doesn't charge even with a new battery, the fault is in the charging circuit on the logic board, which we repair in-house with micro-soldering. If there's any sign of a past spill, we tell you, because liquid damage often shows up as battery and charging problems.
