ROG Ally & ROG Ally X Repair

The ASUS handheld in context

The ROG Ally was ASUS's first serious entry into the Windows handheld category. It launched in 2023 with the AMD Z1 APU (and a higher-spec Z1 Extreme variant), running full Windows 11 on a 1080p 120Hz touchscreen. The Ally X arrived in 2024 as a refresh, keeping the Z1 Extreme but doubling the RAM and battery and rethinking the I/O layout. Both have a real following and both come in for repair regularly.

From a repair perspective the two models share a lot but differ in important places. The cooling layout is different, the battery is bigger on the X, the I/O ports are different, and the SD card slot moved. Knowing which model you have matters when sourcing parts.

The SD card slot, briefly

The original ROG Ally has a well-documented history of SD card slot issues, where heat from the rear vents could affect SD card reads and in some cases damage the slot itself. ASUS addressed this through firmware and minor hardware revisions, and the Ally X moved the slot to a thermally cooler position that appears to have resolved the underlying problem.

If you have an original Ally with SD card issues and the firmware update didn't fully resolve it, the slot itself may need physical repair. This is a board-level job and we do it on the bench.

Common repairs in the handheld category

Beyond the SD card slot specifically, the ROG Ally and Ally X come in for the same kinds of repairs as other handhelds:

• Thumbstick drift. Same wear pattern as the Steam Deck or any other handheld. Module replacement is the real fix. Hall effect upgrade available as a longer-life option.
• USB-C and charging port wear. Heavy cable use loosens or damages the port over time. Board-level replacement.
• Screen damage. Cracked or unresponsive touchscreens are replaced as a complete assembly.
• Fan service. The Ally's dual-fan cooling system depends on both fans being in good shape. When one wears down or seizes, the device thermal-throttles and performance drops. Fan replacement and thermal paste refresh address this.
• Battery replacement. The earliest original Ally units are approaching the age where battery degradation is noticeable. Ally X's larger battery is too new to see widespread degradation yet.
