The ASUS handheld PC space is growing, and so is the demand for someone who knows how to work on it. SD slot issues, thumbstick drift, charging ports, screens, all serviceable on the bench.
The ROG Ally was ASUS's first serious entry into the Windows handheld category. It launched in 2023 with the AMD Z1 APU (and a higher-spec Z1 Extreme variant), running full Windows 11 on a 1080p 120Hz touchscreen. The Ally X arrived in 2024 as a refresh, keeping the Z1 Extreme but doubling the RAM and battery and rethinking the I/O layout. Both have a real following and both come in for repair regularly.
From a repair perspective the two models share a lot but differ in important places. The cooling layout is different, the battery is bigger on the X, the I/O ports are different, and the SD card slot moved. Knowing which model you have matters when sourcing parts.
The original ROG Ally has a well-documented history of SD card slot issues, where heat from the rear vents could affect SD card reads and in some cases damage the slot itself. ASUS addressed this through firmware and minor hardware revisions, and the Ally X moved the slot to a thermally cooler position that appears to have resolved the underlying problem.
If you have an original Ally with SD card issues and the firmware update didn't fully resolve it, the slot itself may need physical repair. This is a board-level job and we do it on the bench.
