The PS4 pulses a slow blue light when it's starting up normally. That same blue light becomes a problem when it never stops pulsing, the console never outputs a signal, and nothing you do gets it past that point. That's the blinking blue light of death, and it's one of the more common PS4 faults we see at GCOM Support's gaming console repair bench.
It's worth being specific about what this fault actually means before getting into the repair side of things.
What the Blinking Blue Light Actually Indicates
The PS4 uses the blue pulsing light to signal that it's trying to boot. Under normal circumstances, the light transitions to white once the system has initialized and is outputting video. When it stays blue, the console has failed to complete that handoff. The system is stuck in a startup loop it can't get out of.
This can happen for a few different reasons, and not all of them require board-level repair. That's why diagnosis matters before anything else.
Software and Firmware Issues
In some cases, particularly after a failed update or corrupted system storage, the PS4 will bluelight without any hardware fault at all. Sony's safe mode recovery process can sometimes resolve this. Sony's PS4 safe mode guide walks through the steps. If safe mode is accessible and a database rebuild or system software reinstall clears the issue, you're done.
But a lot of consoles that arrive at our shop have already been through that process. The bluelight persists because the problem isn't software.
Hardware Faults Behind the Blue Light
When software recovery doesn't work, the fault is almost always one of the following:
- APU solder joint failure. The PS4's AMD APU is a BGA chip, meaning it's connected to the board through a grid of solder balls underneath the die. Heat cycling over years of use can cause those joints to crack or develop high resistance. The CPU or GPU portion of the APU fails to initialize, and the console can't complete its boot sequence.
- HDMI handshake failure. A damaged HDMI port, or a failed HDMI encoder IC on the board, can prevent the console from detecting a display and completing startup. This is particularly common on PS4s that have had a cable yanked out at an angle.
- Power delivery issues. A failing power supply unit or faults on the board's power regulation circuitry can prevent the APU from receiving stable voltage during boot.
- RAM faults. Less common, but failed GDDR5 memory can cause boot failures that look identical to APU-related ones from the outside.
A Typical Case: What Comes In, What Gets Found
One of the more common scenarios we see goes like this: a PS4 original or Slim comes in with a persistent blue light. The owner has already tried a different HDMI cable, a different TV, and a power cycle. Safe mode is either inaccessible or doesn't resolve anything after a reinstall attempt.
First step is a full visual inspection of the board under magnification. We're looking at the HDMI port for bent or pushed-in pins, checking for liquid damage indicators, and looking for anything obviously wrong around the power circuitry or APU area.
If the HDMI port is mechanically damaged, that gets addressed as its own repair. PS4 HDMI port replacement is a straightforward procedure at the board level, though it does require proper micro-soldering equipment to do without damaging the surrounding pads.
If the port is fine, the next step is testing the power supply output and checking the board's power rails under load. A rail that collapses during boot will cause exactly this symptom.
When power delivery checks out, the focus shifts to the APU. At that point, board-level micro-soldering work is typically what's needed. The APU is reballed, meaning the old solder is removed, the pads are cleaned and inspected, and a fresh BGA solder array is applied before the chip is reflowed back onto the board. This re-establishes the connections between the APU and the PCB that heat cycling had degraded.
It's not a guaranteed fix in every case. If the APU die itself has failed internally, reballing restores the connections but can't fix the silicon. That's something we're honest about before any work starts. A reflow or reball resolves the fault in a significant portion of cases, but not all of them, and the diagnosis shapes the conversation about whether it's worth proceeding.
What to Avoid Before Bringing It In
One thing worth mentioning: the "heat gun fix" that circulates online involves blasting the APU area with a heat gun to temporarily reflow the solder. It can produce a working console for a short period, but it also tends to damage nearby components and can make a proper reball harder to execute cleanly. If your PS4 is bluelighting, skipping that step gives a repair shop a better starting point to work from.
Also worth noting: liquid damage isn't always obvious. If there's any chance the console was exposed to liquid, mention it. It changes the diagnostic approach significantly and affects the likelihood of a successful repair. Liquid damage recovery is its own process, and the sooner it's addressed, the better the outcome tends to be.
Repair vs. Replacement
The PS4 has been out long enough that replacement units are widely available used, and that's a legitimate option. What repair offers is the ability to keep a specific console with its associated account data and local saves intact, and in many cases, a board-level repair on a bluelighting PS4 costs less than sourcing a clean replacement. Whether that tradeoff makes sense depends on the specific fault and the condition of the rest of the console.
According to iFixit's PS4 repairability documentation, the PS4 scores relatively well for a console, but APU-level work is firmly in the professional micro-soldering category. It's not a component-swap job.
